Why does hemp smell?

Cannabis smells due to a variety of terpenes found in the plant. Terpenes are organic compounds that are responsible for the characteristic scent of many plants and flowers. In hemp plants, these compounds give hemp its distinctive and unique smell.

Terpenes specific to hemp include myrcene, limonene, pinenes, and caryophyllene. Each of these terpenes has its own specific scent and together they contribute to the well-known weed smell.

The smell of hemp, varies greatly by variety. That is, depending on which variety you grow, the smell can differ. In addition, the smell of hemp usually becomes more intense when your plant is heated, such as when smoking. This is because the heat causes the terpenes to evaporate, which makes their smell stronger.

Why avoid hemp smell in the apartment?

There are several reasons why you should avoid the smell of cannabis in the apartment. Since cannabis has a very strong and distinctive smell, it can be easily noticed and cause unwanted attention from your neighbors. Many find the smell annoying, which is why it's important to make sure it doesn't spread. Even for many growers themselves, the smell is undesirable in their own homes, as it can affect the quality of the living space. Too strong a hemp scent can trigger headaches, allergies or other ailments.

Avoid cannabis smell when indoor

How to avoid hemp smell in the apartment?

There are several things you should look for to minimize or avoid the smell of hemp during growing, drying, and storage.

Indoor Growing

Use an activated carbon filter when growing indoors. Charcoal filters are one of the most effective methods of odor control. They filter and neutralize the smell of cannabis before the air leaves your grow room. If you're growing multiple plants, the Bonsanto Charcoal Filter Max could be a great way for you to eliminate the smell of cannabis in your home or growroom. If you need a less powerful filter and place a lot of value on silence, our Bonsanto activated carbon filter Silent might be just the right filter for you.

To control cannabis odor, good ventilation is essential. Therefore, make sure that your grow room is well ventilated and that the air circulates regularly. If you are growing in a grow box, you can use a fan to circulate the air. If you grow directly in your home, you should ventilate at regular intervals.

To keep the odor of cannabis low, we would generally recommend using a grow box when growing indoors. In this way, the odor can be better controlled and minimized. If you are looking for a grow box, take a look at our Bonsanto grow boxes, because they allow you to grow discreetly and odorlessly indoors.

Drying

To minimize the smell of cannabis, you should make sure to dry your cannabis properly. Poor drying can lead to a stronger smell and even cause mold.

Storage

Strong cannabis odor can also spread when cannabis is stored. Therefore, it is important to store and keep the cannabis properly.

For the storage of cannabis, we recommend the use of an airtight container. This will prevent the smell of hemp from spreading throughout your home. You should also store your harvest in a cool and dark place, because as mentioned before, the smell of cannabis becomes more intense in the heat. So to minimize the smell but maintain the quality of your buds, store them in a cool place. As with growing, you can of course use an activated carbon filter for storage. Place it in your storage area to eliminate the smell of cannabis.

If you store your cannabis as explained above, the smell should not spread in the apartment. If you are still worried that your apartment smells like cannabis, you can also use air fresheners or essential oils, as these can mask the hemp smell in a natural way.
